Abstract

This qualitative research study employs Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic theory as a framework to explore the nuanced feminist themes embedded in Charles Dickens's classic novel, "Great Expectations." By engaging in a close reading of the text and drawing upon the waves of feminism as a contextual backdrop, this research seeks to unravel the complex portrayal of female characters within the Victorian society depicted in the novel. The study employs Gadamer's hermeneutic circle, emphasizing the iterative process of understanding where preconceptions and interpretations continually evolve through dialogue with the text. Through this interpretative journey, the research delves into the multifaceted roles of female characters, including Estella, Miss Havisham, and Biddy, within the patriarchal structures of the 19th century. By situating the analysis within the context of various waves of feminism, from the first-wave suffragettes to the contemporary intersectional feminism, this research examines how Dickens's female characters navigate societal expectations, power dynamics, and their own agency. It explores how Estella's early indoctrination by Miss Havisham influences her perceptions of autonomy and love, leading to a complex negotiation of gender roles. The study highlights Biddy's character as an exemplar of agency and resilience, embodying the principles of feminism across different waves. It engages with Gadamer's concept of "fusion of horizons" to elucidate the evolving feminist perspectives and their intersections within the novel's interpretive landscape. This qualitative, hermeneutic analysis, enriched by Gadamer's philosophical insights, offers a deeper understanding of feminism as depicted in "Great Expectations." It contributes to the ongoing discourse on gender studies by uncovering the intricate layers of interpretation and highlighting Dickens's progressive portrayal of women. Ultimately, this research underscores the enduring relevance of the novel in contemporary feminist dialogues and calls for a renewed appreciation of Dickens's contribution to feminist literature.
